Miles Morales and his Spidey-pals are speeding up their web-swing into theaters, as Sony Pictures announces that the third film in its critically acclaimed animated feature franchise, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, will open one week earlier than previously dated. The eagerly awaited pic will now launch on June 18, 2027, coinciding with both Father’s Day weekend and Juneteenth.
Just a couple months ago, the studio re-set the release for June 25, 2027 — a three-week bump back from the previously announced June 4, 2027 date. Back in the mists of time, Across the Spider-Verse and Beyond the Spider-Verse were planned to open just nine months apart (the latter dated for March 29, 2024) as they were initially developed as a single film.
The third and final Spider-Verse installment will depict the trilogy’s thrilling conclusion, picking up after the cliffhanger ending of Across the Spider-Verse (2023) which stranded Miles (voiced by Shameik Moore) in an alternate reality as the hostage of his own extra-dimensional doppelganger known as the Prowler. The returning voice cast will also feature Hailee Steinfeld (Gwen Stacy/Spider-Woman) and Daniel Kaluuya (Hobie Brown/Spider-Punk). Sony Pictures Animation recently announced development of a Spider-Punk spin-off movie, co-written by and starring Kaluuya.
Beyond the Spider-Verse is directed by returning helmers Bob Persichetti and Justin K. Thompson; produced by Phil Lord, Chris Miller, Amy Pascal, Avi Arad and Jinko Gotoh; executive produced by Aditya Sood and Christina Steinberg; co-produced by Jessica Berri; and written by Lord & Miller and David Callaham.
The first film, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018), debuted to wide critical and audience acclaim, racking up $393.6 million in global box office and going on to sweep awards season with Best Animated Feature wins from the Oscars, Golden Globes, BAFTAs, Critics’ Choice and many others, on top of winning seven out of seven Annie Awards it was nominated for, including the top feature film prize.
The sequel, Across the Spider-Verse, enjoyed a super performance with $690.8 million in global box office. The second title was also nominated for the Best Animated Feature Oscar, Golden Globe and BAFTA honors, and won these honors from the Critics’ Choice, Producers Guild and Annie Awards.
