Watch: Animated Epic ‘Wukong Warrior’ Gets Extended Preview

One unconventional Monk, one comically greedy Pig, one sorrow-filled River Demon, one conniving Fox, one mysterious Horse, one Monkey King … and the most chaotic road trip in mythology.

Summit International Pictures is ramping up for the market launch of Wukong Warrior, a new animated epic inspired by China’s classic Journey to the West tales, with a new extended preview released this weekend. Summit will shop the family-friendly action-comedy at MIPJunior and MIPCOM in October as well as the American Film Market in November.

The first of a planned three-film saga from China’s Mili Pictures (Dragon’s Nest movies), Wukong Warrior will open Chinese theaters in this Fall. Bill Borden (High School Musical franchise) is leading the international rollout, while Disney Media Distribution veteran Todd Barasch has joined Summit to oversee licensing of the film globally outside of China.

Synopsis: Five hundred years ago, he defied Heaven itself and paid the ultimate price. Now, the most mischievous rebel in all of mythology is back — and he’s about to take over the world.

The mythical warrior  Sun Wukong can transform into 72 different forms, travel 55,000 kilometers in a single somersault, and wield a magical staff that can shrink to the size of a needle or grow to support the heavens … But his greatest battle isn’t against demons or dragons — it’s against his own pride.

Joined by a comically greedy pig-warrior, a sorrowful river demon, a scheming fox spirit and Little Peach — a brave monkey girl who believes in heroes.

Wukong Warrior is one of a trio of fully-funded animated features that Summit is bringing to the fall markets. The studio is also shopping the adult-targeted cyberpunk thriller Better Tomorrow: Cyber Edge — a CG reimagining of John Woo’s cult classic A Better Tomorrow — and the kids & family comedy adventure Ping Pong Rabbit.
