Exclusive: Watch the Trailer for ‘The Girl Who Cried Pearls,’ from Oscar Nominees Chris Lavis & Maciek Szczerbowski

After it world premiere in the Official Competition on the opening night of the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, The Girl Who Cried Pearls — the latest stop-motion short film by Oscar-nominated Montreal animation duo Chris Lavis and Maciek Szczerbowski (Madame Tutli-Putli) — has just received the Short Cuts Award for Best Canadian Short Film at TIFF, where it had its North American premiere.

Produced by the National Film Board of Canada (NFB), and narrated by Colm Feore with music by Patrick Watson, The Girl Who Cried Pearls (or, La jeune fille qui pleurait des perles) is a haunting fable about a girl overwhelmed by sorrow, the boy who loves her, and how greed leads good hearts to wicked deeds.

You can read more about the making of the film in Animation Magazine‘s interview here.

The film will be screening in competition at the Ottawa International Animation Festival (September 24-28). In addition, OIAF will present a retrospective of Lavis and Szczerbowski’s work, entitled Universe Room – A Tribute to Clyde Henry is being presented on Thursday, September 25, and Sunday, September 28.

OIAF’s Artistic Director, Chris Robinson, will host a special Artist Talk with Lavis on Saturday, September 27.

Lavis and Szczerbowski (Clyde Henry Productions) are award-winning writers, directors and animators, whose work — rich in surreal detail, dark humor and evocative artistry — explores the mystery and strange beauty of life. Their first film, Madame Tutli-Putli (NFB, 2007), received an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Short, along with 45 awards and mentions.
