Fan-backed production-distribution studio Angel announced today that Grammy-nominated artist Phil Wickham will perform the lead role in animated musical feature David. Created by Phil Cunningham of Sunrise Animation Studios, the film will be released exclusively in theaters on December 19.
Synopsis: David is a larger-than-life animated feature film about one of the most fascinating figures in history. The movie tells the biblical story of David — warrior, poet, shepherd and eventual king — whose faith and courage changed the course of nations. Through breathtaking animation and powerful music, David brings to life the timeless story of a young man who trusted God against all odds.
“There are few men that have had a greater impact on my life than King David. His story, his songs, and his faith have shaped me deeply,” said Phil Wickham, a Platinum-charting Christian music performer from San Diego. “What an honor it has been to help bring this character to life! It truly has been a dream come true that I never saw coming. Finding David’s voice inside of me was both a challenge and a joy — thanks to an amazing team who helped guide the way! I’m so proud to be a part of such a beautiful and life-giving film. I believe it will fill hearts with hope, and lift eyes to Heaven for many years to come.”
Creator Phil Cunningham, who conceived of this project some 30 years ago, commented “Phil Wickham embodies everything we hoped to capture in the character of David. His voice carries adventure, energy, strength, and vulnerability — qualities that reflect David’s heart as a warrior and worshiper. From the first moment we heard him perform, we knew he was the perfect choice to bring this beloved story to life.”
Wickham joins Brandon Engman, who voices David as a youth. Engman is an actor, dancer and singer who already has an impressive and growing resume of film, TV, theater and voice-over credits, the latter including English-language versions of celebrated animated features Belle, Weathering with You and Lu Over the Wall. The voice case also features Brian Stivale (Butch Hartman’s The Garden, Avengers Academy) as Samuel.
Cunningham is the film’s writer and director, and also serves as producer alongside Jacqui Cunningham, Tim Keller and Rita Mbanga.
