‘Mighty Mouse’ Swoops Back to Screens in New MeTV Toons Sunday Block

Here I come to save the day!

Mighty Mouse is on his way! This Fall, the heroic rodent is joining the Sunday afternoon lineup for MeTV Toons, the only TV network dedicated exclusively to classic animation. Mighty Mouse and Friends will air every Sunday for a two-hour block 3-5 p.m. ET/PT beginning November 2. In addition to spotlighting Paul Terry’s classic cartoons, other Terrytoons will also be featured prominently in the block, airing for the first time on broadcast television in decades.

The block will showcase the shorts from the Mighty Mouse Playhouse, which debuted as a Saturday morning show on the CBS television Network in 1955 and aired until 1967, and the later cartoon series Mighty Mouse: The New Adventures, which was produced by famed animation renegade Ralph Bakshi and ran from 1987-1989. Featured cartoons will include Mighty Mouse, Heckle and Jeckle, Terry Bears, Mighty Heroes and Mighty Mouse: The New Adventures.

Originally debuting in 1942 as a series of theatrical shorts created by the Terrytoons studio for 20th Century Fox, Mighty Mouse is a superhero mouse with extraordinary powers. The character later went on to delight TV audiences watching Saturday morning cartoons for decades. In 1987, Bakshi revived the franchise with higher quality production compared to animated series of the time. Animation historian Jerry Beck said Bakshi’s Mighty Mouse “Foreshadowed the higher quality animation boom coming in the next decade.” The series was also one of the first Saturday morning cartoons to be broadcast in stereo.
