‘KPop Demon Hunters’ Sequel Will Bring HUNTR/X Back for a 2029 Encore

Netflix’s animated queens of the screen will be back in a new adventure, with Deadline confirming today that a sequel to the smash hit movie is being planned for release in 2029. The filmmakers behind the Sony Pictures Animation production are reportedly in advance talks with both studios. The first word of talks for a follow-up film bubbled up in August, not long after the first movie’s streaming debut on June 20.

The original music and animation sensation centers on a trio of Kpop superstars — Rumi (voiced by Arden Cho / singing by Ejae), Mira (May Hong / Audrey Nuna) and Zoey (Ji-young Yoo / Rei Ami) — who use their group HUNTR/X as a cover for their mission as demon hunters, protecting their fans from supernatural threats. In the first film, they face off with an irresistible rival boy band of demons in disguise, Saja Boys, led by Jinju (Ahn Hyo-seop / Andrew Choi).

Kpop Demon Hunters reached incredible heights, becoming the most-watched Netflix animated original film of all time and Netflix’s most popular movie overall. Plus, KPop Demon Hunters (Soundtrack from the Netflix Film) is the first soundtrack with four simultaneous Top 10 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 — with “Golden” rising to No. 1 — and boasted more than 7 billion global streams (and counting) as of mid October. The soundtrack hit No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart on September 20.

Just this week, the second limited theatrical engagement for the KPop Demon Hunters sing-along event charted on the domestic Top 10, adding $6 million to its previous sold-out sessions in August to reach nearly $24M in domestic box office.

Netflix also recently inked an unprecedented double master toy license deal with Mattel and Hasbro, who will introduce a full portfolio of toys, collectibles, games, role-play products and more throughout 2026.

KPop Demon Hunters is produced by Netflix in partnership with Sony Pictures Animation, directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, from a script by Danya Jimenez, Hannah McMechan, Kang and Appelhans. The voice ensemble also includes Yunjin Kim, Joel Kim Booster, Liza Koshy, Daniel Dae Kim, Ken Jeong and Byung-hun Lee.

Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans will be celebrated at the 2025 World Animation Summit (Nov. 17-19) as Hall of Fame Award winners and featured award season spotlight panelists. Read more about the making of KPop Demon Hunters in Animation Magazine‘s feature story here.
