Miss Piggy Readies for Her Close Up with New Movie in Development

A new Muppets movie? Pour moi?

Academy Award-winning actress-producer Jennifer Lawrence has announced that she is developing a new movie inspired by Jim Henson’s iconic Muppets character, Miss Piggy. Lawrence is teaming up with fellow Oscar winner Emma Stone for the project, and have tapped rapidly rising star Cole Escola (Oh, Mary!) to write the script.

Lawrence revealed during Las Culturistas podcast hosted by Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers: “I don’t know if I can announce this, but I’m just going to. Emma Stone and I are producing a Miss Piggy movie and Cole is writing it.” When asked, she added that the movie will likely feature appearances by herself and Stone — “We have to.”

Muppets rights holder Disney has not made an official announcement.

The Miss Piggy project follows the recently announced reboot of The Muppet Show from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg (Point Grey Pictures), 20th Television, Disney Branded Television and The Muppets Studio. The comeback is formatted as an event special which will bring Kermit, Piggy, Fozzie, Gonzo and the rest of the gang back to the Muppet Theatre to produce a variety show. Sabrina Carpenter is set to guest star, and the untitled special will premiere in 2026 timed to the original series’ 50th anniversary.

Created by designer Bonnie Erickson and puppeteer Frank Oz, who performed the iconic ham until 2002, Miss Piggy was a breakout foam-and-wire star of The Muppet Show (1976-1981). More than just the hopelessly romantic on-again/off-again paramour of Muppets manager Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy won over audiences with her explosive, diva personality, penchant for extraneous French and tendency to vent her feelings with karate chops. A more demure Piggy was first introduced on a 1974 Herb Alpert special on ABC, followed by another draft of the character in the pilot special The Muppet Show: Sex and Violence in 1975.

Since The Muppet Show and her own 1982 special The Fantastic Miss Piggy Show, Miss Piggy has appeared in all the fan-favorite Muppet movies (The Muppet Movie, The Great Muppet Caper, The Muppets Take Manhattan, The Muppet Christmas Carol, Muppet Treasure Island, The Muppets, Muppets Most Wanted) and television spin-offs/reboots, including the 2D animated series Muppet Babies (1984-1991) and its CG reimagining (2018-2022). Miss Piggy has been performed by Eric Jacobson since 2001. Due to her high profile in Hollywood, the grand dame of the Muppet Theater has made several appearances at Academy Awards ceremonies, as well as talk shows, charity events and even the Coronation Concert for King Charles III. In 2015, Miss Piggy received an award from the Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art.
