Having danced his way into moviegoers’ hearts as the voice of the lead character in Happy Feet, Elijah Wood will head up the all-star voice cast for the upcoming CG-animated movie 9, according to ComingSoon.net. The feature-length extension of Shane Acker’s Oscar-nominated short film is being produced by Tim Burton and will be released theatrically by Focus Features, which is also financing the pic.
Wood, star of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, will voice the title role of 9, a rag doll struggling to survive in a post-apocalyptic world where his kind are hunted by fierce mechanical creatures. He will be joined in the audio booth by Oscar winner Jennifer Connelly (The Hulk), actor/filmmaker Crispin Glover (What Is It?), Academy Award winner Martin Landau (Ed Wood), Annie nominee Christopher Plummer (Babes in Toyland) and John C. Reilly (Year of the Dog).
Plummer will voice the role of 1, a domineering war veteran, while Landau gives voice to an aged inventor named 2. Reilly will be stalwart mechanic 5, Glover a visionary and artist named 6 and Connelly a brave warrior with the moniker 7.
Acker’s CG-animated 2005 short film was named Best Animated Short at the San Diego Comic-Con Int’l and picked up a Student Academy Award before taking top honors at SIGGRAPH. The filmmaker is directing the feature as well from a script by Pamela Pettler. Timur Bekmambetov and Jim Lemley are producing alongside Burton and Focus creative exec David Gerson is overseeing the project for president of production John Lyons.
