Spider-Man 3 Huge Overseas

It has yet to open in North America but Columbia Pictures’ Spider-Man 3 is already a massive hit. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the movie pulled in a record $29.2 million during its opening day in 16 overseas markets, outperforming Spider-man 2 by 86%. Domestically, the film accounts for 94% of all ticket sales made through Fandango.com in advance of its May 4 bow.

The third Spider-Man installment set opening-day records in 10 of the 16 markets, including France, where it grossed $6.1 million to surpass the $4.9 million earned by the first two Spider-Man films combined on their first days. Spider-Man 3 also gave Italy and Korea their biggest openings of all time, snagging $4 million and $3.4 million respectively.

Receipts in Germany totaled $4.6 million, while moviegoers in Japan shelled out $3.7 million for the web slinger to give the film both countries’ biggest Tuesday openings. Spidey also busted records in Austria, Belgium, Holland, Switzerland, Egypt, Singapore, the Philippines, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Thailand. By Sunday, the pic will have opened in 107 countries.

Based on these early overseas returns, Spider-Man 3 is on track to out-gross both of its predecessors, despite mixed reviews. Eager fans in North America can catch midnight screenings tonight.
