Warner Bros.’ 300 had the most nominations but it was Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest that walked away with the most wins Sunday night at the 2007 MTV Movie Awards. The second flick in the franchise cleaned up as its sequel continues to find treasure at the box office worldwide.
Pirates took the award for Best Movie, winning over 300, DreamWorks’ Blades of Glory, 20th Century Fox’s Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan and Fox Searchlight’s Little Miss Sunshine. The vfx-laden swashbuckler also garnered a Best Performance win for Johnny Depp, who beat out co-star Keira Knightley, among others.
Bill Nighy was nominated for Best Villain for his turn as the tentacle-faced CG creation Davy Jones in Pirates, but lost the award to Jack Nicholson for The Departed. Also up for the award were Tobin Bell for Saw III, Rodrigo Santoro for 300 and Meryl Streep for The Devil Wears Prada.
300 picked up its only award for Best Fight. The battle between King Leonidas and the ‘Uber Immortal’ pulled off an upset over the naked tussle between Sacha Baron Cohen and Ken Davitian in Borat, which was favored to win.
A new category added this year was Best Summer Movie You Haven’t Seen Yet. Taking the cake was DreamWorks/Paramount’s Transformers (July 4), winning out over 20th Century Fox’s Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (June 15), Warner Bros.’ Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (July 13), Universal’s Evan Almighty (June 22) and New Line Cinema’s Hairspray (July 20) and Rush Hour 3 (August 10).
While animated features were shut out of this year’s competition, Shrek the Third star Mike Meyers was presented the MTV Generation Award. Honored for his 20-year career, the Canadian-born comedian joined the ranks of winners Jim Carrey and Tom Cruise.
