Spidey Sets IMAX Record

While it may seem like a drop in the bucket for a film that has earned more than $844 million worldwide, a $20 million gross on IMAX screens around the world is proof of the growing popularity of big vfx films like Sonny/Columbia Pictures’ Spider-Man 3 in larger format exhibition. Spider-Man 3: The IMAX Experience opened onn May 3 and reached the $20 million milestone faster than any other 2D IMAX release. The movie is currently playing on 84 IMAX screens domestically and 34 internationally, making it the most widely released pic in IMAX’s 40-year history.

Released earlier this year, Warner Bros.’s 300 reached $20 million at IMAX venues in its first month, setting the bar that Spider-Man 3 easily cleared. The innovative sword-and-sandal pic from director Zack Snnyder also opened on 84 IMAX screens worldwide, adding to a box office total of more than $400 million.

Directed by Sam Raimi, who helmed the first two installments, Spider-Man 3 has out-grossed its blockbuster predecessors to become the most successful entry in the trilogy, which has earned around $2.4 billion worldwide. Raimi and stars Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst seem ready to throw in the towel and call it a good run, but Sony and Marvel will most likely keep the series going as long as it keeps shattering box office records.
