As his critically heralded fantasy feature, Stardust, rolls into theaters today, director Matthew Vaughn has been attached to direct a movie based on Marvel Comics’ Thor, according to Daily Variety. Vaughn is expected to star production on the superhero flick this winter. He’ll be working from a script by Mark Protosevich, who most recently collaborated with Akiva Goldsman on the upcoming adaptation of the Richard Matheson novel I Am Legend.
Made into a comic-book superhero by Stan Lee, Larry Lieber and Jack Kirby, Norse God Thor first appeared in the pages of Marvel Comics’ Journey Into Mystery in 1962. The hammer-swinging immortal quickly became a staple of the Marvel universe and most recently showed up in animated form in the direct-to-DVD Ultimate Avengers movies.
Vaughn’s first film was the very successful British crime thriller Layer Cake, which made a star of Daniel Craig. His sophomore effort, Stardust, stars Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer, Claire Danes and a host of other noteworthy actors. Based on the novel by Neil Gaiman (Coralline), the vfx-laden pic was released to theaters today by Paramount Pictures.
Marvel Studios scored big with fans when it showed footage from its next superhero pic, Iron Man, which is sated to come out on May 2, 2008. The company is also taking another stab at building a Hulk film franchise with The Incredible Hulk, which stars Edward Norton and will be released by Universal releases on June 13, 2008.
