Disney/Pixar’s Ratatouille was the top box-office performer outside of North America for the second consecutive weekend, according to Daily Variety. The CG buddy flick earnd approximately $21.1 million in 34 markets, thouroughly besting all other newcomers, including Universal’s The Kingdom. The United Kingdom was particularly kind to Ratatouille as moviegoers plunked down around $9.8 million for its opening, which was timed with a major school holiday.
The animated rat tale remained strong in Germany, slipping only 22% in its second week with $6 million. Victories in Austria, Denmark, Greece, Norway and Switzerland also helped to drive foreign receipts to approximately $271.4 million. The pic has made more than $475 million worldwide, with openings still planned for China, Italy, Poland and Sweden.
Sony ScreenGems’ video game-based zombie sequel Resident Evil: Extinction took in around $9.8 million overseas to finish second. The action-packed horror flick has augmented its domestic gross of $48 million with nearly $44 million in foreign ticket sales, putting it on par with its tweo predecessors. The last installment, Resident Evil: Apocalypse, wound up with $129 million worldwide.
Domestically,the top performer of the week was Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married from Lionsgate. The latest in a string of hits for Perry, the urban comedy generated about $21.5 million to trample fellow openers We Own the Night ($11 million) from Sony Pictures and Elizabeth: the Golden Age ($6.1 million) from Universal.
