Chicago 10 Hits Theaters

Roadside Attractions today launched the limited U.S. theatrical run of Chicago 10, a largely animated he largely animated documentary from filmmaker Brett Morgen, director of the Robert Evans doc The Kid Stays In the Picture. The film, which revolves around the antiwar protests at the 1968 Democratic Convention in Chicago, opened the 2007 Sundance Film Festival and now makes its way to the viewing public in 14 theaters, just in time for the 40th anniversary of the historical event.

Featuring the voices of actors Hank Azaria and Mark Ruffalo, Chicago 10 recreates the trial of members of the revolutionary Yippie movement through archival footage and computer-animated courtroom reenactments. The doc is produced by River Road Ent. and Participant Prods. Participant previously produced the Al Gore global warming documentary An Inconvenient Truth and George Clooney’s Edward R. Murrow biopic Good Night, and Good Luck.

Opening in wider release today is New Line Cinema’s Will Ferrell basketball movie, Semi-Pro, which has a good chance of taking the top spot with little competition from fellow newcomers. Summit Ent.’s ugly duckling romantic comedy, Penelope, opens in nearly 1,200 theaters, while Sony Columbia’s period drama The Other Boleyn Girl bows on even fewer screens.

Chicago 10 is joined in limited release by Bonneville, SenArt/Scranton-Lacy Films’ menopausal chick flick, and City of Men, Miramax’s gritty tale of Brazilian street life from the the producer of City of God.
