Soaring high on the success of Iron Man, its first self-financed and produced feature, Marvel Studios has reportedly beefed up its development slate with a big-screen version of its Runaways comic-book series. The Hollywood Reporter notes that Brian K. Vaughan, who co-created the series with artist Adrian Alphona, is working on the screenplay for producer Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios.
The Harvey Award-winning Runaways debuted on comic store racks in 2002. The series revolves around a group of teenagers who ran away from home after discovering that their parents are super villains and that they have inherited various powers. Together, they seek to come to terms with their family situations and try to make up for the sins of their mothers and fathers by doing good deeds.
Vaughan’s comic series Y: The Last Man is in development at New Line Cinema. In addition to penning comics, he is a co-producer and scribe on ABC’s hit primetime drama Lost, which wraps up its third season with a two-hour finale Thursday night.
Marvel’s second home-grown flick, The Incredible Hulk, hits theaters on June 13. Iron Man will return in a sequel slated for April 30, 2010, followed by Thor on June 4, 2010. The studio’s 2011 slate will kick off with the May 6 bow of The First Avenger: Captain America (working title), followed by The Avengers in July of that year. Ant-Man is also listed as being in development. Upcoming licensed pics include Lionsgate’s Punisher: War Zone for Dec. 5, 2008 and 20th Century Fox’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine for May 1, 2009.
