Though he’s a little older and a little slower, everyone’s favorite archeologist proved he still has what it takes to make a killing at the box office. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, the long awaited fourth installment in the series, earned an estimated $151 million domestically over the five-day Memorial Day holiday period. Another $146.4 (est.) was earned from foreign play dates, bringing the worldwide gross to roughly $297.5 million.
Disney’s The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian dropped to second place with an estimated $28.6 million for its second week in domestic release. The vfx-driven pic has started to hit theaters overseas, taking in around $22 million in foreign markets to drive its worldwide take to approximately $119 million.
Now in its fourth week, Paramount’s Iron Man nearly matched Prince Caspian‘s domestic draw with an estimated $25.6 million. The Marvel Studios superhero flick from director Jon Favreau remains the film to beat this summer, having earned around $258 million in North America and roughly $486 million worldwide. Though it’s slowly slipping down the chart, the film has managed to retain a substantial audience week after week. If Indiana Jones has the same kind of momentum, it could quickly catch up and become the season’s top earner.
Also showing strong legs is the 20th Century Fox comedy What Happens In Vegas. The Ashton Kutcher/Cameron Diaz pairing was No. 4 for the weekend, picking up another $11 million stateside to lift its domestic cume to around $56 million. The pic has traveled remarkable well for a Hollywood comedy, pulling in roughly $59 million in foreign markets for a worldwide gross of approximately $115 million.
Warner Bros.’ Speed Racer hasn’t fared nearly as well. The Wachowski brothers’ live-action adaptation of the classic anime series rounds out the top five with an estimated $5.2 million. The CG-laden attempt at a summer thrill ride opened the same week as What Happens in Vegas but has only managed about $67.4 million worldwide to date.
