The summer movie season gets underway for real today with the wide release of X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
The Fox/Marvel prequel, in which Hugh Jackman reprises his role as the hirsute hero Logan, is opening in some 4,000 theaters and is expected to bring in some big bucks.
Playing the underdog role is Battle for Terra, a 3-D animated feature film. The film is being released by Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions in some 1,160 theaters and arrives having won kudos at the Ottawa festival. Battle for Terra
Counter-programming comes in the form of the Warner Bros./New Line comedy Ghosts of Girlfriends Past. The film stars Matthew McConaughey and Jennifer Garner and opens in more than 3,000 theaters.
The pace of summer releases will now come fast and furious, with the arrival May 8 of Star Trek, Angels & Demons on May 15, Terminator: Salvation on May 21, Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian on May 22 and the Pixar/Disney 3-D animated feature Up on May 29.
