Warner Bros. is hoping the manga series Death Note is as popular on the big screen as it is in print, picking up the rights to turn it into an American live-action release. The property already has two live-action films under its belt from WB Japan which have had some success in U.S. theaters.
Charley and Vlas Parlapanides have been hired to adapt the series into a screenplay, Variety reports. Producing the film is Roy Lee and Doug Davison of Vertigo and Brian Witten and Lin Pictures. The new film will be adapted directly from the manga, and not a re-imagining of the Japanese films.
The series, which runs 13 manga volumes by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata, is about a college student who finds a ‘death note’ that gives him the ability to kill anyone by writing their name.
