Hemsworth Picks Up Hammer of Thor

Actor Chris Hemsworth is having a good year: First he became the father of Captain James T. Kirk in Star Trek, and now he’s about to be proven worthy of lifting the hammer Mjolnir as the star of Marvel’s upcoming Thor movie.

The studio is in final negotiations with the actor for the lead role in Thor and to reprise it in the Avengers movie.

Kenneth Branagh is set to direct Thor, which will be based on the classic comic book by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in which the headstrong Norse thunder god is banished to earth to learn humility and is hailed as a superhero.

Hemsworth, an Australian native, stars in MGM’s remake of Cabin in the Woods and was just signed to play the lead role in a remake of Red Dawn.

Thor is set to open May 20, 2011, with Avengers to follow in 2012.
