Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen steamrolled its way to the summer’s best box office opening, taking in $112 million over the three-day weekend for a five-day total of more than $200 million.
The Michael Bay-directed VFX extravaganza took in a total of $201.2 million in five days, falling just shy of the $203.8 million The Dark Knight grossed last summer in its first five days of release.
Worldwide, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen has taken in about $387 million, making it one of the best movie debuts ever.
Everything else earned a mere fraction of the business Transformers did. The Sandra Bullock-Ryan Reynolds romantic comedy The Proposal came in a distant second with $18.5 million, bringing its two-weekend gross to $69 million.
The Hangover continues to perform well, coming in third place with $17.2 million and a domestic total of $183 million.
Disny-Pixar’s Up also held up well, with a $12 million weekend that brought its domestic total to $250 million ‘ making it so far the year’s top grosser, and surpassing Star Trek‘s $246 million.
My Sister’s Keeper, the only other major film to open wide this weekend, took in $12 million. That was good enough for fifth place.
Rounding out the top ten were the comedy Year One with $5.8 million, The Taking of Pelham 123 with $5.4 million, Star Trek with $3.6 million, Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian at $3.5 million and Away We Go with $1.7 million.
