The secret is out: The rats of NIMH are returning to the big screen.
Paramount is developing a new feature film take on the classic Robert O’Brien children’s book Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, Neil Burger in talks to write the script and Cary Granat, formerly of Walden, set to produce, according to reports in The Hollywood Reporter and Variety.
The book previously was adapted into animation as The Secret of NIMH, directed by Don Bluth and released in 1982.
The film likely would be a mixture of live action and animation, much like Fox’s successful Alvin and the Chipmunks, though the studio has yet to decide on a visual approach to the project.
This would be the first family fare project for Burger, who directed The Illusionist and The Lucky Ones.
