Horror Remains Final Word at Box Office

Not much changed at the box office this Labor Day weekend, as horror film The Final Destination held on to the top spot for the second week in a row.

The Warner Bros.-New Line release pulled in $15.4 million in the four-day weekend, just enough to edge out the Quentin Tarantino film Inglorious Basterds, which took in $15.0 million.

Animated fare was in short supply, with Disney’s English-language release of Ponyo caming in 16th for the weekend. The most-recent film from Japanese animation legend Hayao Miyazaki, earned $1.8 million in its fourth weekend out. The film has earned $13.5 million in its U.S. release.

Also still in release are Disney-Pixar’s Up and Fox-Blue Sky’s Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs. Up has earned $290 million domestically, while Ice Age has earned $194 million.

The three new releases this weekend were the Fox comedy All About Steve, earning $13.9 million; Gamer, which earned $11.2 million; and Extract, the new film from King of the Hill creator Mike Judge, which took in $5.3 million.
