Weekend Lifts 9 Grosses Over $15 million

9 was No. 2 this weekend at the box office, grossing $10.8 million from Friday to Sunday and bringing its five-day opening total to $15.2 million.

The Focus Features animated feature, directed by Shane Acker, was beaten out only by the debut of Tyler Perry’s I Can Do Bad All By Myself, which lead the weekend with $24 million.

The weekend’s other newcomers included the Sony horror film Sorority Row and Warner Bros.’ graphic novel adaptation Whiteout, taking in $5.2 million and $5.1 million respectively.

With summer transitioning into fall, only a few other animated films remained in release. Ponyo, the English-language version of the most recent Hayao Miyazaki film, grossed $656,000, bringing its five-week total to $14.4 million.

Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs took in $400,000, adding a tiny bit to its impressive domestic gross of $194.7 million.

And Fox’s Aliens in the Attic took in $345,000, padding its domestic gross to $24.2 million.
