Beauty vanquished the beast at the box office this Valentine’s Day weekend.
The Warner Bros. comedy Valentine’s Day jumped to the head of the pack to earn an estimated $56.4 million in its opening weekend, handily besting No. 2 film The Wolfman.
Universal’s Wolfman opened with $31.7 million, just barely ahead of Fox’s youth fantasy film Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, which earned $31.4 million.
In fourth place is Avatar, which earned $23.5 million in its ninth weekend out. That pads its record all-time box-office gross to $661 million domestic.
Animated films still in release are Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel, which earned $1.3 million for a domestic total to date of $214 million; and Disney’s The Princess and the Frog, which took in $600,000 for a domestic total to date of $101.7 million.
