Sony Pictures Classics has picked up North American rights to Sylvain Chomet’s new animated feature, The Illusionist, and is planning a late 2010 release, according to IndieWire.
The Illusionist is based on an unproduced screenplay by the late French filmmaker Jacques Tati and was highly acclaimed at the Berlin Film Festival.
Chomet’s last feature, 2003’s The Triplets of Belleville, was a critical smash and commercial indie success. It was nominated for two Oscars ‘ Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song ‘ and grossed just over $7 million in the United States.
Sony Pictures Classics also handled the release for Triplets.
The film is being planned for North American release toward the end of 2010.
