Iron Man 2 proved stronger than Robin Hood at the box office, retaining the top spot at the box office with an estimated weekend take of $53 million, while DreamWorks’ How to Train Your Dragon is holding up with a fifth-place finish after eight weeks of release.
Robin Hood, starring Russell Crowe and directed by Ridley Scott, opened in second place with a $37 million domestic take. While underwhelming a bit in the United States, Robin Hood was a smash hit in the international market, taking in $74 million for a first-weekend total of $111 million.
The victory brought Iron Man 2‘s domestic gross to $212 million, while its global total has topped $216 million for a total of $428 million. It has a way to go to top the original Iron Man, which earned $318 million domestic and $266 million international for a $585 million total in 2008.
DreamWorks Animation’s stereoscopic 3D feature How to Train Your Dragon finished the weekend with $5.1 million. It has earned $207 million domestically and $221 million in the international arena for total of about $429 million.
Other animated and VFX-heavy films still in release include Warner Bros.’ Clash of the Titans, which had a $1.3 million weekend; Alice in Wonderland, which made $410,000; Avatar with $350,000; and The Secret of Kells with $21,300.
Kells‘ total domestic gross has inched up to $458,000.
