Inception, Christopher Nolan’s much-anticipated follow up to The Dark Knight, arrives in theaters to take on Disney’s live-action take on the classic Mickey Mouse cartoon The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.
Inception, which features visual effects from Double Negative and New Deal Studios, is one of the most-anticipated new films of the summer. The film, which is opening wide at more than 3,700 cinemas, has earned glowing reviews from critics resulting in an 86 percent fresh rating at Rotten Tomatoes and a 73 rating from Metacritic.
The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, which opened Wednesday in just under 3,400 cinemas, stars Nicolas Cage and Jay Baruchel as master and apprentice. The film, directed by Jon Turteltaub, features effects work from Double Negative, Asylum FX, KNB EFX Group, Rising Sun Pictures, Ghost VFX and Method.
The film is based on an eponymous segment from Disney’s 1940 animated classic Fantasia, which is itself based on the 1797 Goethe-written poem Der Zauberlehrling.
Both films enter a marketplace with several strong holdovers, including the animated features Despicable Me and Toy Story 3, as well as The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.
