Dreams ruled over the laughs this weekend at the box office as Inception topped the rankings for a third weekend in a row.
The Christopher Nolan-directed film grossed $27 million for the weekend, bringing its domestic total to $193 million. Its overseas gross is $170 million, making for a $363 million worldwide total.
The new comedy Dinner for Schmucks game in second with an estimated $23 million, followed by the action film Salt with $19 million.
The animated feature Despicable Me held on to fourth place, taking in $15 million for the weekend for a total of $190 million domestic in its fourth weekend of release. The stereo 3D movie also has racked up $29 million overseas for a $219 million worldwide total.
Visual-effects heavy family film Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore opened with a $12 million weekend, good enough for fifth place.
Toy Story 3’s seventh weekend in release took in $5 million, for a domestic total of $389 million. The Disney-Pixar film took in $436 million overseas, for an $826 million worldwide gross.
Also still in release is The Last Airbender, which took in $1.8 million in its fifth weekend for a $127 million domestic total and $39 million overseas for a $166 million worldwide tally. And DreamWorks Animation’s Shrek Forever After took in $536,000 in its 11th weekend, for a domestic total of $235 million. Its foreign total stands at $404 million for a worldwide total of $639 million.
