New Flicks Set Sights on Inception, Despicable Me

Universal-Illumination’s animated feature Despicable Me and Warner Bros.’ three-time champ Inception both look to hold up against a pair of major studio releases at the box office.

Up first is the action-comedy film The Other Guys, starring Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg. A Sony/Columbia release, it is set to play in more than 3,400 theaters.

Also out this week is Step Up 3D, which is distributed by Disney and set to play at about 2,400 cinemas.

The release of Step Up will displace some 3D screens for Despicable Me, the family comedy film Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore and Toy Story 3.

The next major animated feature release is the Sept. 24 debut of Zack Snyder’s Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’hoole.
