In advance of this year’s E3 event in Los Angeles, Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) today announced a new 80GB model of its PlayStation 3 video game console. The upgraded units will be available this August and will be sold with the popular online-enabled racing game MotorStorm. Meanwhile, the company has lowered the price of the current 60GB model by $100, effective immediately.
The expanded hard disk drive in the new 80GB PS3 provides more space for gamers to store downloaded games and other entertainment content from PLAYSTATION Network. There are currently more than 60 playable games and game-related downloads available through the PLAYSTATION Store, with more offerings on the way.
The 80GB PS3 will be available in time for gamers to enjoy more than 120 new first- and third-party software titles coming out over the holidays and through the end of the fiscal year. Key upcoming Sony games include Folklore, Heavenly Sword, LAIR, NBA ’08, Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, SingStar, SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation, The Eye of Judgement, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune and Warhawk. Highly anticipated third-party PS3 releases include Devil May Cry IV, Dynasty Warriors: GUNDAM, Grand Theft Auto IV, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Hellboy and Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.
Additional games and services coming to the PLAYSTATION Network include PlayStation Home, a 3D online community that serves as a meeting place for PS3 users around the world, and numerous downloadable games including the highly anticipated PAIN.
Both the 80GB and 60GB PS3 models come standard with the Cell Broadband Engine (Cell/B.E.), a Blu-ray Disc player, built-in HDD 1080p high-definition output, Wi-Fi connectivity and SIXAXIS wireless controller. For more information, go to www.us.playstation.com.
