Motion graphics and editorial design studio AvatarLabs has opened for business in Encino, Calif. Under creative director, producer, and designer Rex Cook, the company’s initial efforts are servicing the CBS-TV series Still Standing, the Discovery Channel special James Cameron’s Expedition: Bismarck, and a TV trailer promoting the indie feature film, Real Women Have Curves.
For Still Standing, AvatarLabs not only created and produced the main title design/opening sequence, it provided creative direction on a live-action shoot featuring the show’s stars, Mark Addy and Jami Gertz. The team later integrated original stop-motion animation based on original design concept and storyboards it created for the show’s producer, Randy Cordray of Twentieth Century Fox Television.
Cook, formerly a creative director with Ant Farm, Intralink and Colony Design, serves as creative director on the upcoming TV special, James Cameron’s Expedition: Bismarck, set to air Dec. 8. He, along with designer Nicolai Strehl and the rest of the team, is charged with designing the motion graphics in eight different languages.
