‘Eyes of Wakanda’ Bumps Up Premiere with All Four Eps. Dropping Aug. 1st

In a pre-Comic-Con interview, showrunner and director Todd Harris revealed to EW that all four half-hour episodes of Eyes of Wakanda will be premiering simultaneously on Disney+ on August 1, three and a half weeks ahead of the originally announced August 27 launch date.

Executive produced by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Ryan Coogler (Black Panther, Fruitvale Station, Sinners), Eyes of Wakanda explores Wakandan history through tales of the brave warriors who traveled the world to collect vibranium artifacts.

The first episode will center on a former Dora Milaje member Noni (voiced by Winnie Harlow), now a prospective candidate for the Wakandan secret service known as Hatut Zaraze, described by Harris as “James Bond version of a Dora” who doesn’t fall in line with everything the organization asks of her.

Noni and the Lion

The episode is set in the year 1260 B.C.E., and sets Noni on the trail of a man known as the Lion (Cress Williams) — a former Wakandan who set himself up as an independent warlord using the nation’s advanced technology, and is now set on conquering the Greek island of Crete. It’s Noni’s job to track him down and recover the stolen Wakandan artifacts. These events echo through the rest of the semi-anthological series, as different heroes at different point of time and in different places seek out more these coveted items.

“People pull truth out of history, and it might not necessarily be objective truth, but it’s theirs. And also, people who try to make events happen give it a personal context,” Harris added. “The quote [from the show], ‘[History is] written by people who weren’t there and didn’t have anything to do with it,’ but they’re trying to make that story mean something to them. So that’s an interesting needle to thread throughout the series.”

Harris also confirmed in the interview that a surprising iteration of Iron Fist will make an appearance in the show.

In addition to Harlow and Williams, Eyes of Wakanda features the voices of Anika Noni Rose, Steve Toussaint, Winnie Harlow, Patricia Belcher, Larry Herron, Adam Gold, Lynn Whitfield, Jacques Colimon, Jona Xiao, Isaac Robinson-Smith, Gary Anthony Williams and Zeke Alton.

A sneak peek at the show was unveiled earlier this month. Read our interview with the showrunner and director Todd Harris in the next issue of Animation Magazine (Issue 352).
