Fans of the critically acclaimed, Oscar-winning Spider-Verse franchise from Sony Pictures Animation can look forward to a new feature film starring Hobie Brown, a.k.a. Spider-Punk. The project is currently in development with co-writers Daniel Kaluuya (Judas and the Black Messiah) and Ajon Singh (Primetime).
Kaluuya voiced the character (and helped the film team flesh him out) in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023) and is set to reprise the role for Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, currently slated for release on June 25, 2027.
Plot details of the Spider-Punk film are yet to be unmasked.
Hobie Brown/Spider-Punk was created by writer Dan Slott and artist Olivier Coipel, and first appeared on the page in a Spider-Verse crossover event in The Amazing Spider-man #10 (2015). This version of Spider-Man from Earth-138 rocks a punk scene-inspired look and attitude, with a driving desire to take down corrupt systems within the establishment.
The animated feature franchise launched in 2018 with Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which won the Best Animated Feature Oscar (directors Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey and Rodney Rothman; producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller), BAFTA and Golden Globe, as well as seven Annie Awards and many others. The first pic also grossed more than $394 million in worldwide box office, and was followed in 2023 by Beyond the Spider-Verse, which received an Oscar nomination and grossed $690 million.
Kaluuya is represented by WME, B Side and Johnson Shapiro Slewett. Singh is represented by WME, Untitled Entertainment and Ziffren Brittenham.
