This summer, audiences were offered a fresh look at the world created by Belgian comics artist Peyo in Paramount Animation’s Smurfs, which is closing in on the $100 million box worldwide box office mark after opening domestically on July 18. Not long after revealing their status as the project’s sole animation and VFX vendor, Cinesite has debuted a new breakdown reel offering a glimpse at the process of designing, building and animating the franchise’s latest chapter.

Smurfs is directed by Chris Miller (Shrek the Third, Puss in Boots) and written by Pam Brady (Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken, South Park). The voice cast features Rihanna, James Corden, Nick Offerman, JP Karliak, Daniel Levy, Amy Sedaris, Natasha Lyonne, Sandra Oh, Octavia Spencer, Nick Kroll, Hannah Waddingham, Alex Winter, Maya Erskine, Billie Lourd and Xolo Maridueña, with Kurt Russell and John Goodman.

Check out the breakdown reel below; you can read an accompanying Case Study on Cinesite’s website here.
