Ellipse Animation today released a statement on the tragic passing of French animation director Philippe Vidal Dumas at 59 years of age. An impactful and well regarded figure in the European animation industry, Vidal is best known for his work on series including The Garfield Show, Bobby & Bill, Valerian & Laureline, Contraptus and, most recently, Belfort & Lupin, which was this year honored with a Pulcinella Award.
Born on June 16, 1966 in Boulogne-Billancourt, Vidal discovered his passion for visual storytelling very early in life. After studying English and Law, he joined CFT Gobelins (now Gobelins, l’école de l’image) in 1987 to pursue formal training in animation. He became part of Ellipse Studio at its founding in 1990, beginning as a production assistant on Babar. He later worked as a layout supervisor on The Adventures of Tintin, Orson & Olivia, Rupert and Blake & Mortimer, and as a storyboard artist on The NeverEnding Story.
In 1996, Vidal made his directing debut with two short films before helming the series Fennec (1997), the TV movie Fracasse (1998) and the feature film Becassine: The Viking Treasure (2001). Throughout the ’90s, he also contributed as a layout director on the series Bob Morane and Mot.

Throughout the 2000s, he continued bringing iconic comic-book characters to animated life in notable projects including Valerian & Laureline, Contraptus and The Garfield Show. His work on the latter, in close collaboration with Garfield creator Jim Davis, spanned five seasons, achieved tremendous global success and earned Vidal an Emmy Award nomination. He later directed for the follow-up series, The Adventures of Garfield.
In a recent post to his News from ME blog, animator Mark Evanier recalls Vidal as “a giant in the French animation industry and a very nice, talented man who I had the honor of working with on five seasons of The Garfield Show [as the supervising producer].”
“He supervised and often drew and designed everything that made it into a TV series after it left me. I was delighted with just about everything that resulted and the few times I wasn’t delighted were — I learned — instances where Philippe fought for something and lost. He was very good at his job.” Evanier adds, “Philippe was truly a lover of great cartooning and animation … and you could tell that by the way he approached every single job he did in those art forms.”

Vidal was especially adept as such animal-centric comedy as fans enjoyed on The Garfield Show. He was able to play more in this field with Bobby & Bill (two seasons in 2016 and 2019, recipient of the Unifrance Export Prize) and Belfort & Lupin (2025), produced by Ellipse in collaboration with France Télévisions.
The studio concluded its statement:
“During his entire career, Philippe has played a key role in shaping European animation, continuously evolving his artistic approach alongside technological advancements while remaining true to his unique style, sensitivity and inventiveness. A tireless creator, he was also developing Deer Colin, a literary and audiovisual project inspired by his personal story.
“Philippe Vidal Dumas is a key figure at Ellipse Animation, where he had just celebrated 35 years of collaboration. His warmth, generosity, curiosity and attentiveness leave a profound impact on his colleagues and collaborators.
“Ellipse Animation extends its heartfelt condolences to his partner, his son Benjamin, his family and all those close to Philippe.”
