Four years after the animated tale of one family’s fight against a malevolent tech takeover premiered, Netflix has confirmed that a sequel to The Mitchells vs. the Machines is in the works. The follow-up to the 2021 Oscar-nominated pic will again be produced by Netflix, Sony Pictures Animation and Lord Miller, Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s production banner.
Details of the project, announced on Netflix’s social feed, are yet to be revealed.
The Mitchells vs. the Machines, originally announced as Connected, was directed by Mike Rianda, who also wrote the script with fellow Gravity Falls alum Jeff Rowe. The stylish, colorful and zippy 3D CG animation told the story of an old-school dad (Danny McBride) seeking to reconnect with his plugged-in family before his filmmaker daughter (Abbi Jacobson) goes off to college. Opting to force a road trip to drop her off at school, the family-bonding plan goes awry when a machine apocalypse is unleashed. The voice cast also featured Maya Rudolph, Eric André, Olivia Colman and internet star Doug the Pug as the family dog, Monchi.
Upon its release, The Mitchells vs. the Machines became a hit on Netflix, setting a record for the platform’s most-streamed animated movie. (Another SPA project, the ubiquitous phenom KPop Demon Hunters, currently holds the title.) Netflix followed up with a theatrical release in partnership with Iconic Events. Critics and viewers lauded the imaginative animation, performances and LGBTQ+ representation. The film was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature (as well as the BAFTA) and swept the Annie Awards in all categories it was nominated for, including Best Animated Feature. It also picked up the top toon honor at the Critics Choice Awards.
