Cartuna and Irony Point have announced that the critically acclaimed indie animated feature Boys Go to Jupiter will bring its surrealist CG coming-of-age adventure to Video-on-Demand platforms on Tuesday, November 4. The distributors have also announced that pre-orders are now open for a very special limited edition vinyl of the soundtrack to Julian Glander’s out-of-this-world musical comedy.
The film stars NPR’s Planet Money host Jack Corbett in his first film role as Billy 5000, a teenager in suburban Florida desperately trying to make $5,000 when his winter break is turned upside down by the arrival of a bizarre creature from another world. The cast roster also features Janeane Garofalo (Reality Bites), Elsie Fisher (Eighth Grade), Tavi Gevinson (Gossip Girl), Grace Kuhlenschmidt (The Daily Show), Joe Pera (Joe Pera Talks With You), Julio Torres (Problemista), Sarah Sherman (Saturday Night Live), Tony Award-winner Cole Escola (Oh, Mary!), Eva Victor (Sorry, Baby), River L. Ramirez (Los Espookys), Max Wittert (High Maintenance), J.R. Phillips (Summer Camp Island), Chris Fleming (Hell), and comedy writer Demi Adejuyigbe.
Boys Go to Jupiter is directed and written by Glander, and executive produced by Peisin Yang Lazo.
Synopsis: It’s the day after Christmas in suburban Florida and Billy 5000 (Jack Corbett) and his friends pass the seemingly endless days by slacking, shoplifting, and beatboxing. In between lounging on the beach and sneaking into pools, Billy spends his time hustling on the food-on-demand app Grubster, desperate to make $5,000 before New Year’s Eve. As he darts around the city delivering to a series of oddball characters, a routine stop at the mysterious Dolphin Groves Juice Company leads to a run-in with his former classmate — and crush — Rozebud (Miya Folick) and a surprise backpack stowaway in Donut, a bizarre creature from another world. But Dr. Dolphin (Janeane Garofalo), the powerful orange juice CEO, will do anything to get Donut back, and Billy is forced to make hard choices about love, friendship, and how far he’ll go for financial security in a world ruled by capitalism in this absurdist and musical take on a coming-of-age comedy.
A special Boys Go to Jupiter Limited Edition 12″ Orange Vinyl Scratch-n-Sniff Original Movie Soundtrack will be released by Wild Signal, with only 500 available. Pre-orders are currently open, and orders will ship on December 1. The 23-track collectible album includes all the hit music from the film, headlined by Folick’s viral song “Winter Citrus.”
Boys Go to Jupiter is the feature film directorial debut of Glander, a self-taught 3D artist, animator and filmmaker known online as glanderco. His early experiments with Tumblr GIFs led to directing work on viral projects for Adult Swim, Disney, HBO Max, and Cartoon Network, while his 3D illustrations frequently appear in the New York Times and New Yorker. In 2019, he released the video game ART SQOOL, which has since become a cult hit.
The film debuted at the 2024 Tribeca Festival and went on to screen at competitions across the North America and Europe, including the Ottawa International Animation Festival and Anifilm. Boys Go to Jupiter won the Best Narrative Feature prize at Indie Memphis Film Festival.
