‘Death Stranding’ Anime from Hideo Kojima Coming to Disney+

Following news this summer that the award-winning action-adventure video game Death Stranding (2019) is getting an adult animated feature adaptation, Disney Branded Television’s Asia Pacific original content showcase revealed that a new anime series project Death Stranding Isolations (working title) is coming to Disney+ in 2027. The news was shared by Death Stranding creator Hideo Kojima, who made a surprise appearance at the Hong Kong event.

Kojima said the show will be “pretty mind-blowing,” taking advantage of the expansive storytelling possibilities of animation and introducing new characters to the Death Stranding world. Kojima serves as executive producer, and was joined on stage by director Takayuki Sano (Bullet/Bullet, Gridman Universe). The showcase included new concept art by character designer Ilya Kuvshinov (Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045, Dead Dead Demons Dededede Destruction) and a logline from Disney+:

Set in the world of Death StrandingDeath Stranding Isolations (working title) will tell a completely new story, separate from that of the video games. The upcoming series will follow a young man and woman as they set out on an adventure.

The anime series will be produced in hand-drawn 2D style, handled by Japanese studio E&H Production (Ninja Kamui, Red Cat Ramen).

Kojima also shared that the Disney initially approached him about expanding his video game world into an animated series while working with the company on the 2023 documentary Hideo Kojima: Connecting Worlds.

The Death Stranding game has amassed over 20 million players worldwide since its release six years ago. The game’s story is set in the near future, where mysterious explosions have rocked the globe, setting off a series of supernatural events known as the Death Stranding. With otherworldly creatures plaguing the landscape, and mass extinction imminent, it’s up to Sam Porter Bridges to travel across the ravaged wasteland and save humanity from impending annihilation.

The original game featured performances from Norman Reedus, Mads Mikkelsen, Léa Seydoux, Margaret Qualley, Troy Baker and more. The sequel, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, added Elle Fanning to the cast and was released in June of this year for PlayStation 5.
