It may say something about the nature of the blockbuster mentality of the entertainment business that a film that has grossed $500 million worldwide has garnered so little attention. But the latest remake of King Kong has done that. And now it’s dominating the DVD market as well.
King Kong has sold more than 6.5 million DVDs since its release six days ago, the largest six-day performance in Universal Studios history. Fans snatched the blockbuster adventure film off shelves, generating $100 million for the Universal Studios Home Entertainment release.
“Hands down, (this) ranks as one of Universal’s biggest and most successful cinematic triumphs of all time,” enthuses Craig Kornblau, president, Universal Studios Home Entertainment.
Both the original theatrical version and the Special Collectors Edition two-disc set of the King Kong DVD has, among other things, collectible package artwork specially created by WETA Digital Ltd. Taking a page from Star Wars marketing mavens, the DVD release has been supported by cross-promotional partners including Papa John’s Pizza, Glad, Hostess, Orville Redenbacher’s Gourmet Microwave Popcorn, Kellogg’s, Nestle, Toshiba, Chase and Kodak EasyShare.
The single disc version is available at $29.98 and the two-disc Special Edition is priced at $30.98.
