Snakewoman to Slither from Virgin Comics

Publisher Virgin Comics has announced the first title in its ‘Director’s Cut’ line of comics created by well-known filmmakers. The series, which will include a comic from action impresario John Woo, will premiere on July 19 with the retail debut of Snakewoman from Shekhar Kapur, director of the 8-time Oscar nominated historical feature Elizabeth.

The first of many filmmaker-created series in the works, Snakewoman is described as the sexy and mysterious tale of Jessica Peterson, a woman who will eventually kill 68 men. The comic is being illustrated by Michael Gaydos (Alias, The Pulse) and written by Zeb Wells (Civil War: Young Angers/Runaways). The cover of Snakewoman #1 was painted by Mukesh Singh at the Virgin Comics studio in Bangalore, India.

‘Snakewoman is such a visual story, it has been easy for me to imagine it told as comics and graphic novels,” Kapur comments. “Sharad Devarajan and his team at Virgin understand how Snakewoman comics become storyboards for the Snakewoman film.

Kapur was behind the controversial film Bandit Queen, which garnered international attention when it was banned by the Indian government. He has since gone on to direct notedworthy films in both Bollywood and Hollywood. He is currently in the U.K. filming a sequel to Elizibeth titled Elizabeth: The Golden Age.

In November of 2005, Kapur co-founded Virgin Comics LLC with Virgin Enterprises head Sir Richard Branson, author Deepak and South Asian comic publisher Gotham Entertainment Group LLC. At the same time, the partnership established Virgin Animation Private Ltd, which is focused on building production and distribution partnerships for animated features, both traditional and CG.
