Drawn Together, Voltron on Disc

There’s a little something for both adults and kids in this week’s batch of animated TV favorites on DVD. The second season of Comedy Central’s Drawn Together arrives as an uncensored two-disc set and a fourth volume of Voltron: Defender of the Universe offers fans more mechanized mayhem as the property lurches toward its big-screen debut. Also hitting shelves today is Paramount Home Entertainment’s Wayside: The Movie, a new animated feature based on Louis Sachar’s best-selling children’s book series Sideways Stories From Wayside School.

Drawn Together: Season 2 Uncensored features 15 episodes of the animated reality TV spoof about eight cartoon characters from different genres sharing a house and having their lives taped for the viewing audience. Bonus features include commentary tracks, a karaoke sing-along, behind-the-scenes interviews and a feature dubbed ‘Potentially Annoying Commentary on Commentary.’ The set can be picked up for the suggested retail price of $26.99. The fourth season of Drawn Together will premiere on Thursday, Oct. 4 at 10:30 p.m. on Comedy Central.

Picking up where the third volume left off, Voltron: Defender of the Universe Volume Four is a three-disc set that contains the remaining seven installments from season one the first seven season two adventures. Special features include episode synopses with original airdates, a featurette on the American-produced episodes, a stills gallery, man-on-the-street reflections on the show and interviews with voice actors Michael Bell (Lance), BJ Ward (Princess Allura/Witch Haggar) and Neil Ross (Keith). The set lists for $39.95.

The ’80s cartoon series about heroes who pilot giant mecha robots competed with Transformers and Robotech on the tube, and may take the battle the big screen as well. Twentieth Century Fox’s New Regency is in negotiations with the Mark Gordon Co. to make a live-action/CG feature based on show. In addition, Eagle One Media Inc. acquired licensing rights from World Events Prods. and plans to produce a set of feature-length Voltron movies for DVD.

Wayside the Movie takes place in a wacky school that was accidentally built 30 stories high. The pic is an extension of the Nevalna-produced animated series that airs on Nickelodeon and chronicles the adventures of Mrs. Jewls’ class on the 30th floor. The academic loonacy is seen through the eyes of new kid Todd, who manages to make friends despite the fact that everyone at the school is a little off kilter. Wayside: The Movie lists for $16.99.
