Expect to see a lot more of Alvin, Simon and Theodore in the future. In addition to grossing more than $350 million in theaters worldwide, 20th Century Fox’s Alvin and the Chipmunks is raking it in hand over fist on home video. The DVD was released on Tuesday, selling more than 2.6 million copies on the first day alone to become the year’s fastest selling home video title. The family flick was also voted Favorite Movie at the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards over the weekend.
The Chipmunks can also be seen in their live concert show dubbed Get Munk’d Tour 2008, which has been playing in malls across the country. The tour will travel to eight additional markets including Chicago, Seattle, Minneapolis, San Francisco, Atlanta, St. Louis, San Diego and Salt Lake City before wrapping up on April 13. In addition to promoting the movie, the show is part of the property’s 50th anniversary re-launch.
The Chipmunks were created by Ross Bagdasarian, Sr. in 1958. The fictional rodents quickly became popular recording stars, churning out 16 studio records, selling more than 43 million albums and snagging five Grammy Awards. The animated Alvin and the Chipmunks TV series debuted in 1983 and was broadcast in more than 100 countries. An animated feature and various TV specials followed.
