American Dad, AVP on DVD

The aliens are here and one of them talks like late comedian Paul Lind and enjoys pecan sandies. The antics of sarcastic Area 51 refugee Roger can be seen in the third volume of episodes of FOX’s animated series American Dad, which arrives at retail along with 20th Century Fox’s action-horror sequel Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem.

American Dad is the brainchild of Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane, Mike Barker and Matt Weitzman. The show revolves around Stan Smith (voiced by MacFarlane), a CIA agent struggling to keep his somewhat dysfunctional family in line. The three-disc DVD set offers 19 episodes, plus audio commentary on select episodes by MacFarlane, Barker and Weitzman; a making-of featurette; animatic comparisons; a table read; and deleted scenes.

Following its weak Christmas Day theatrical opening, Alien Vs. Predator: Requiem is out to find an audience on home video. The film stars a cast of relative unknowns in a gory slug-out between two nasty species from other planets. The brawl rages on Earth, where unsuspecting residents of a small town must band together in a bid to survive the melee. The film is directed by brothers Colin and Greg Strauss, accomplished visual effects supervisors who also oversaw effects work on the film. Hydraulx and Pixel Liberation Front handled most of the movie magic.

The extraterrestrial clash is available on DVD and Blu-ray as a single-disc release offering the rated theatrical version, as well as a single-disc unrated theatrical cut and an extreme unrated two-disc special edition. Extras include commentary by the directors and producer John Davis, and additional commentary by creature effects designers/creators Tom Woodruff Jr. and Alec Gillis. The extreme unrated version adds 10 minutes of never-before-seen footage, still design galleries and five behind-the-scene featurettes titled Prepare for War: The Making of AVP-R, Fight to the Finish: The Making of AVP-R, AVP-R: The Nightmare Returns: Creating the Aliens, Crossbreed: The PredAlien and Building the Predator Homeworld.
