Indiana Jones Unseats Sleeping Beauty on DVD

Not surprisingly, Paramount’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull has been the top seller on DVD since its retail launch last Tuesday. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the fourth installment in the adventure series edged out Disney’s re-release of the animated classic Sleeping Beauty to debut at No. 1, while Paramount’s other summer hit, Iron Man held onto the No. 2 spot in its third week on home video. Blu-ray Disc sales panned out the same way.

In Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, archeologist/adventurer Indiana Jones is lured back into action when learns of a Soviet plot to solve the mystery behind the Crystal Skulls, real-life artifacts that have been baffling scientists and historians for many years. Harrison Ford returns in the titular role and Karen Allen reprises the role of Marion Ravenwood from Raiders of the Lost Ark. Filling out the main cast are Shia Labeouf, Cate Blanchette, Ray Winstone, John Hurt and Jim Broadbent. Industrial Light & Magic handled the lion’s share of visual effects work.

The flick also debuted at No. 1 on Home Media Magazine‘s rental chart. M. Night Shyamalan’s box-office dud, The Happening, dropped to No. 2, and Iron Man rests at No. 3 on that list. While Indiana Jones made more cash in theaters, roughly $783 million worldwide, Iron Man did better in first-week sales. Blu-ray versions of the Marvel superhero movie have been particularly popular with consumers. Marvel Studio’s The Incredible Hulk arrived at retail on Tuesday and is expected to top sales charts this week.
