Nominees for the 61st Annual Golden Globe Awards were announced this morning, placing Disney/Pixars Finding Nemo and New Lines The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King in the running for Best Picture (Musical or Comedy) and Best Picture (Drama) respectively. In both cases, the films are up against mostly non-genre fare. Actor/producer Michael Douglas will be honored with the coveted Cecil B. DeMille Award when the globes are handed out on Jan. 15 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. The event, produced by Dick Clark Prods. in association with the HFPA, will air live on NBC.
While not the only fish in the category, Nemo is the sole animated pic in a pond populated by live-action entries. Twentieth Century Foxs Bend It Like Beckham, Universals Big Fish, Focus Features Lost in Translation and Universals Love Actually make up the competition. While not surprising, Nemo’s inclusion is another big stride for animation as it struggles to gain legitimacy in the greater film and television community.
On the dramatic side, the EFX-laden Return of the King takes on Miramaxs Cold Mountain, Twentieth Century Foxs Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, Warner Bros. Mystic River and Universals Seabiscuit. The last installment in the filmed adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkiens literary trilogy also garnered a Best Director nod for Peter Jackson, who is in league with Sofia Coppola (Lost In Translation), Clint Eastwood (Mystic River), Anthony Minghella (Cold Mountain) and
Peter Weir (Master and Commander: The Far Side Of the World).
Both the Nemo and ROTK casts were shut out in the acting categories. The full list of nominees follows:
