A number of Springfields throughout the nation vied for the chance to host the hometown premiere of 20th Century Fox’s The Simpsons Movie, but the honor ended up going to Springfield, Vermont. Series creator Matt Groening, exec producer James L. Brooks, producers Al Jean and Richard Sakai and director David Silverman will attend the 2 p.m. screening on Saturday, July 21 at the Springfield Movie Theater, located at 26 Main Street.
Sharing the same name as the hometown of the animated Simpsons clan, Springfield, Vermont was one of fourteen Springfields that competed to hold the premiere of the first feature film based on the long-running primetiem series. USA Today invited its readers to vote for their favorite Springfield through a website and voting page on usatoday.com. The request generated 109,582 votes, with a total of 15,367 going to Vermont. Springfield, Illinois was a close second with 14,634 and Springfield, Oregon was third with 13,894 votes. Full results for all participating Springfields can be seen at www.thesimpsons.usatoday.com..
In the eagerly awaited Simpsons Movie, Homer must save the world from a catastrophe he himself created. The voice cast features series regulars Dan Castellaneta, Julie Kavner, Nancy Cartwright, Yeardley Smith, Hank Azaria, Harry Shearer, Pamela Hayden and Tress MacNeille, with Albert Brooks chipping in. The pic opens nationwide on July 27th.
