Regular viewers of Comedy Central’s The Colbert Report should be familiar with Tek Jansen, a series of short, animated segments produced by New York-based J. J. Sedelmaier Prods. (JJSP). President and creative director J. J. Sedelmaier has announced that two Tek episodes have been accepted into competition at the Ottawa International Advertising Festival in the Television Animation for Adults category. The Festival takes place in Ottawa, Canada Sept. 19-23.
Based on Colbert’s self-published and currently undistributed novel about the escapades of a 25th century renegade hero, Tek Jansen was created by the producers and writers of The Colbert Report and produced by Samantha Scharff and Meredith Bennett. JJSP completed work on the first round of cartoons last year with Dan Madia serving as co-director and designer.
Sedelmaier and Colbert first collaborated on Robert Smigel’s Saturday Night Live cartoon The Ambiguously Gay Duo, and later teamed up for animation on comedy Central’s Strangers with Candy and The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. In addition, Sedelmaier helped cast Colbert in Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim series Harvey Birdman-Attorney at Law. JJSP also animated the title card for Spartina, Colbert’s production company, which is seen at the end of every episode of The Colbert Report.
This year, the Ottawa Festival received a total of 2077 entries from 73 countries. Of those, 94 short films, three feature films and three schools were chosen for competition.
