The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has issued a reminder that animated features must be submitted by Thursday, Nov. 1 to qualify for the 80th Academy Awards. Filmmakers must submit entry forms and supporting materials to the Academy by 5 p.m. that day. The deadline to submit accompanying film prints is Friday, Nov. 16.
The year saw a large number of animated features released worldwide, which means that we may see a total of five films in competition when nominations are announced. If there are fewer than 16 features qualified, the nominee pool will drop to three. We saw this happen last year when Luc Besson’s Arther and the Invisibles was disqualified for having too many live-action sequences.
Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2007 will be presented on Sunday, Feb. 24, 2008 at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center. ABC Television Network will carry the broadcast. A complete list of Academy Awards rules is available at www.oscars.org/80academyawards/rules.
