DreamWorks Animation’s Shrek the Third was voted Favorite Family Film and FOX’s The Simpsons took the award for top animated TV comedy at the 34th Annual People’s Choice Awards, held Tuesday night at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End beat out the DreamWorks/Paramount blockbuster Transformers and the Universal hit The Bourne Ultimatum for the honor of Favorite Movie.
The third Pirates film also won Favorite Movie ‘Threequel’ over The Bourne Ultimatum and Sony/Columbia’s Spider-Man 3. In addition, star Johnny Depp emerged as the most popular male movie star in a field of nominees that included Denzel Washington and Bruce Willis. Matt Damon beat both Depp and Willis in the Action Star category for his role in The Bourne Ultimatum, while Depp’s co-star, Keira Knightly, proved the most popular female action lead.
The Simpsons Movie lost to Knocked Up in the Comedy Movie category, while Favorite Movie Drama went to Warner Bros.’ Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. On the tube, SCI FI Channel’s vfx-laden Stargate: Atlantis was voted Favorite sci-fi series over Battlestar Galactica and Dr. Who on the same network.
Like the upcoming Golden Globes, the People’s Choice Awards had to alter its format due to the Writer’s Guild of America strike. Rather than attending a red-carpet ceremony, the stars were taped accepting their awards from various locations around the world. Robin Williams, for example, gave his acceptance speech for Favorite Funny Male Star from Kabul, where he has been entertaining the troops for the USO.
