The Asian island nation of Singapore will play host to a first-of-its-kind 3-D film and entertainment technology festival taking place November 19-23. Jim Chabin of 3D Partners Ltd. will serve as exec producer of the 3DX: 3D Film & Entertainment Technology Festival, a five-day event supported by the Media Development Authority of Singapore (MDA) and the Singapore Tourism Board (STB). Films to screen include the CG-animated family film Fly Me to the Moon from Belgium’s nWave Pictures and Illuminata.
‘The development of a world-class 3-D festival in Singapore highlighting the creative talent and technology in 3-D film underlines Singapore’s commitment to play an active role in expanding the boundaries of 3-D entertainment,’ comments MDA CEO Dr. Christopher Chia. ‘3DX will provide a world stage and convergence point for filmmakers and technology companies to showcase their works for trade and consumer audiences. It will also provide industry players the opportunity to generate discussions on the latest trends and developments in 3-D.’
‘Hosting festivals such as 3DX will elevate our status as an exchange capital and help cement Singapore’s standing as one of the pioneers in embracing and supporting 3D technology and film production in the world,’ adds Aloysius Arlando, assistant chief executive of business travel and MICE Group for Singapore Exhibition and Convention Bureau, a group of the STB.
Featuring the voices of Kelly Rippa, Christopher Lloyd, Nicollette Sheridan, Adrianne Barbeau and real-life Apollo astronaut Buzz Aldrin, Fly Me to the Moon revolves around three tween-aged flies who decide they want to become part of the space program and hatch a plan to stow away on the 1969 Apollo II mission. The film is directed by Ben Stassen of nWave Pictures and will be distributed in IMAX venues and other North American theaters equipped for digital 3-D projection on Aug. 22.
In addition to Fly Me to the Moon, the 3DX program will include the highly anticipated Journey to the Center of the Earth 3-D (a.k.a. Journey 3-D), New Line Cinema’s and Walden Media’s live-action adventure starring Brendan Fraser, Josh Hutcherson and Anita Briem. Attendees will also be able to enjoy a red-carpet reception and gala celebration, forums featuring guest speakers, directors, 3-D pioneers, visionaries and catalysts, and other special entertainment events for the public.
The current list of 3DX organizations and media sponsors includes the Motion Picture Association (MPA), NBC Universal TV Asia, Star TV India and Star Movies. Other Singapore Government agencies backing the fest include the Singapore Economic Development Board and Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore.
